Academic Coaching

ACADEMIC COACHING FOR MIDDLE SCHOOLERS, HIGH SCHOOLERS, AND COLLEGE STUDENTS

Does school feel like a daily struggle for you and your teen? Are you a college student feeling overwhelmed by the demands of your courses, staying on top of your deadlines, or managing your time? You're not alone.

There are some signs that a student could benefit from academic coaching:

  • Struggles with organization – Frequently loses homework, forgets due dates, or has a cluttered backpack or digital workspace

  • Poor time management – Procrastinates, underestimates how long tasks will take, or crams at the last minute

  • Difficulty starting or finishing tasks – Gets overwhelmed at the beginning of assignments or has trouble following through to completion

  • Trouble with focus and attention – Easily distracted, has difficulty staying on task, or switches between tasks without finishing

  • Inconsistent academic performance – Capable but grades don’t reflect their true potential

Executive function skills are the mental processes that help us plan, organize, focus, remember instructions, manage time, and juggle multiple tasks successfully. For many students, especially in today’s fast-paced academic environment, these skills don’t come naturally.

Academic coaching empowers students with practical strategies and personalized support to build the foundational skills they need to succeed—not just in school, but in life. Coaching isn’t tutoring—it’s about building lifelong habits for focus, motivation, and independence, so students can feel confident and capable.

Here are some of the skills we focus on during coaching sessions:

  • Organization
  • Prioritization
  • Task decomposition
  • Time management
  • Task initiation
  • Follow-through/task completion
  • Motivation
  • Study strategies
  • Goal setting
  • Visualizing outcomes
  • Student communication with teachers

HOW IT WORKS

There are five steps to the academic coaching process:

1. Inquiry call: This call is a chance for you to share your goals and determine if this academic coaching program is the right match!

2. Onboarding process: You can share any assessments, IEPs, 504 plans, and other documentation. We'll work together to set clear goals and expectations for the coaching sessions.

3. Academic coaching sessions: These 60-minute sessions are held on a weekly basis, and they are individualized for each student. We will work on strengthening executive function skills to help break the cycle of overwhelm, procrastination, and disorganization. In-person sessions are held in High Point with Zoom sessions available as needed.

4. Parent check-in meetings: These 30-minute family meetings are held each month to share wins and adjust goals as needed. The student is the central voice in this meeting. These meetings are optional for college-aged students.

5. Phase out: As skills are gained and goals are met, we will discuss an incremental phase out from coaching. In general, many students participate in coaching sessions for one semester, but this varies by student.
